Writing an original research paper with my coauthor at the AEA Summer Program in 2019 helped me prepare to do the rigorous, analytical work performed by the Congressional Budget Office. Now, in my job as an assistant analyst at CBO, I do analysis that touches on health care policies being considered by the Congress, which for me highlights the importance of CBO's work. Through my experience at both CBO and the AEASP, I am being well prepared for graduate school and for a career in public policy research.

Each January, CBO recruits a new cohort of assistant analysts. Assistant analysts acquire real-world experience by working under the direction of experienced analysts to support the Congress.

Assistant analyst positions are entry level and for those with an undergraduate degree. The positions last for three years. Assistant analysts work on research, data analysis, statistical analysis, database management, literature review, and quality assurance. Most pursue a graduate degree at the end of their term, often in economics or public policy.
