For Students

Undergraduate Students

Writing an original research paper with my coauthor at the AEA Summer Program in 2019 helped me prepare to do the rigorous, analytical work performed by the Congressional Budget Office. Now, in my job as an assistant analyst at CBO, I do analysis that touches on health care policies being considered by the Congress, which for me highlights the importance of CBO's work. Through my experience at both CBO and the AEASP, I am being well prepared for graduate school and for a career in public policy research.

Each January, CBO recruits a new cohort of assistant analysts. They acquire real-world experience by working under the direction of experienced analysts to support the Congress.

For people with an undergraduate degree, assistant analyst positions are entry level and last for three years. In their work at CBO, they typically do research, data analysis, statistical analysis, database management, literature reviews, and functions that provide quality assurance. Most pursue a graduate degree at the end of their term, often in economics or public policy.

Graduate Students

Each January, CBO recruits summer interns for a paid 10-week program. The internship is for students pursuing a graduate degree in economics, public policy, health policy, finance, data science, or a related field. The internship is project based, and assignments are determined largely on the basis of students’ interests, knowledge, and academic background. Learn more about the internship program.

Applicants who have already completed their degree program are encouraged to view our current job openings. Ph.D. job market candidates are also invited to attend a session discussing current opportunities. Interested students can contact careers@cbo.gov.
