S. 2415 would reauthorize the appropriation of $58 million annually over the 2024-2028 period for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support state efforts to prevent maternal mortality. The projects to be supported include improved collection and reporting of data on maternal mortality and enhancements to surveillance systems for identifying and reducing disparities in maternal mortality. The efforts also include support for state and tribal review committees on maternal mortality, which provide ways for family members and others to report maternal deaths. In 2023, $108 million was appropriated for that purpose. S. 2415 also would require CDC to regularly provide hospitals, state professional societies, and other groups with information about best practices for preventing maternal morbidity and mortality.
Assuming appropriation of the authorized amounts and using historical spending patterns for those activities, CBO estimates that implementing S. 2415 would cost $244 million over the 2024-2028 period and $46 million after 2028.
