S. 776 would designate segments of the Gila River system in New Mexico as components of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and would transfer 440 acres of land from the Gila National Forest to the Gila Cliff Dwellings Monument. Under the bill, the designated areas of the Gila River would be withdrawn from hardrock mining and mineral leasing, subject to valid existing rights. In addition, S. 776 would require the Departments of Agriculture and the Interior to develop a management plan and prepare maps of and legal documents for the designated segments.
