Demographic Outlook

In an annual report usually released in January, CBO provides the Congress with projections of the size and composition of the U.S. population over the next 30 years. Those demographic projections feed the agency's 10-year (baseline) and 30-year (extended baseline) projections of what the U.S. economy and the federal budget would look like if current laws governing taxes and spending generally remained unchanged. Like the reports on the budget and economic outlook, CBO's reports on the demographic outlook usually compare the agency's current projections with its previous projections and with forecasts published by other agencies.
