H.R. 9326 would require NIST to establish a five-year pilot program to award grants to support meetings that set standards for artificial intelligence and other critical and emerging technologies. The bill also would require the agency to brief the Congress on opportunities to support the development of those standards. Finally, H.R. 9326 would authorize NIST to establish a web portal to help federal agencies and industry navigate ongoing efforts to develop such standards.
Using information about the cost of similar provisions, CBO estimates that it would cost NIST $5 million over the 2027-2031 period to implement the bill’s requirements. That amount would include $1 million per year for the cost of grants and less than $500,000 in total for the cost of briefing the Congress and establishing a web portal. Any related spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
