S. 2224 states that it should be the policy of the United States to use its position in international organizations to resist China’s efforts to influence such organizations against Taiwan. It also states that the federal government should encourage U.S. allies to oppose China’s attempts to undermine Taiwan’s diplomatic relations and partnerships with other countries. In addition, the bill would broaden an existing reporting requirement for the Department of State to include information about how China has been hindering Taiwan’s diplomatic relations.
On the basis of information about the costs of similar reports and diplomatic efforts to influence the actions of other nations and international organizations, CBO estimates that implementing S. 2224 would cost less than $500,000 over the 2026-2030 period. Any spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
