S. 491 would add roughly 30 miles of river segments along the York River in Maine to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The bill also would authorize the National Park Service (NPS) to enter into cooperative agreements with state and local governments to protect and preserve those river segments.
Using information from the NPS on the typical costs of managing wild and scenic rivers, CBO estimates that implementing S. 491 would cost roughly $200,000 annually and $1 million over the 2022-2026 period; such spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
