As part of its mandate to provide nonpartisan analyses to assist the Congress in making decisions that affect the federal budget and the economy, CBO produces an economic forecast twice per year. Those forecasts are used in the agency’s projections for the federal budget and in cost estimates for proposed federal legislation.
This presentation describes how CBO produces its semiannual economic forecast and provides an overview of the agency’s most recent forecast, which was published on April 9. It also includes a discussion of the effects of the 2017 tax act on that forecast.
