As the 115th Congress gets under way, we are excited to announce the launch of a new video that provides an overview of CBO’s role and responsibilities and a revamped Introduction to CBO page on our website. The new video and revamped page are geared toward Members of Congress and staff who are new to the Congress or simply unfamiliar with CBO.

We address questions we typically receive, such as:

  • What types of publications does CBO produce?
  • What are cost estimates and when does CBO prepare them for legislation?
  • How does CBO decide what to study?

The video was produced at the request of the Committee on House Administration, in partnership with the Congressional Research Service, as part of orientation materials for new Members.

Since 1975, CBO has produced independent analyses of budgetary and economic issues to support the Congressional budget process. Each year, the agency’s economists and budget analysts produce dozens of reports and hundreds of cost estimates for proposed legislation. CBO is strictly nonpartisan, conducts objective, impartial analysis, and does not make policy recommendations.

We look forward to serving the 115th Congress!

Keith Hall is CBO’s Director.
