According to CBO's estimates, about 150 million Americans under the age of 65 currently have an employment-based health insurance plan as their primary source of coverage, and another 13 million people have primary health insurance coverage purchased directly from an insurer. Private insurance finances about one-third of the $2.4 trillion spent in this country in 2010 for health care services.
