Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Since 1974, the federal government and the states have provided cash assistance to low-income aged, blind, and otherwise disabled individuals under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. The federal SSI program establishes uniform, nationwide eligibility rules, and it makes cash payments to elderly and disabled people with low income who are eligible.

Growth in Means-Tested Programs and Tax Credits for Low-Income Households

Feb 2013 - During the past 40 years, federal spending for major means-tested programs and tax credits for low-income households more than tripled as a share of gross domestic product. In 2012, such spending totaled $588 billion.
