If current laws remained generally unchanged, the United States would face steadily increasing federal budget deficits and debt over the next 30 years—reaching the highest level of debt relative to GDP ever experienced in this country.

Corrections and Updates

On May 4, 2017, CBO reposted the file of supplemental data called “Long-Term Budget Projections” to include corrections to labels in the data for Figure 10 and to add a new sheet, "Federal Debt When Social Security Benefits Are Limited to Amounts Payable From Dedicated Financing."

On July 28, 2017, CBO reposted the file again to include corrected values for labor productivity in the sheet called “Annual Values for Demographic and Economic Variables That Underlie CBO’s Extended Baseline.”

On October 27, 2017, CBO reposted the data file called “Projections Underlying Social Security Estimates” to clarify the note on the sheet about average interest rates.
